Q. 2. Give geographical reasons: (Any Two, 3 Marks each = 6 Marks)
1. India is passing through the third stage of demographic transition.
Answer:
(i) Decline in Death Rate: With advancements in medical science, extensive healthcare services, mass immunization, and control over epidemics, the death rate in India has declined significantly and steadily.
(ii) Trend of Declining Birth Rate: Expansion of education, rising literacy, growing urbanisation, and greater awareness of family planning have contributed to a steady decline in the birth rate.
(iii) Population Growth Trend: Although the birth rate is higher than the death rate causing the total population to grow, the actual growth rate has slowed down.
(iv) Improvement in Living Standards: Economic development and rising per capita income have led to an improvement in the general standard of living, accompanied by smaller family sizes.
(v) Conclusion: A stage characterised by a declining birth rate and a low death rate represents the third stage (late expanding stage); hence, India is in the third stage of demographic transition.
——————————————
2. The literacy rate is an indicator of the economic and social development of a country.
Answer:
(i) Human Resource Development: Literacy directly enhances knowledge, vocational skills, and labour productivity, creating a competent and skilled workforce.
(ii) Employment and Income Generation: Literate individuals have greater access to employment in secondary, tertiary, and quaternary sectors, which elevates per capita income and living standards.
(iii) Women Empowerment: Higher literacy improves the socio-economic status of women and helps eliminate regressive traditions, taboos, and gender disparity.
(iv) Health and Family Welfare: Educated citizens demonstrate higher awareness regarding hygiene, nutrition, maternal-child health, and family planning.
(v) Civic and Policy Participation: Literate societies effectively utilise government schemes, adopt modern technology, and actively contribute to overall socio-economic progress.

3. Population is sparse in mountainous and hilly regions.
Answer:
(i) Rugged Relief: Steep slopes, dissected topography, and uneven terrain restrict the availability of flat land suitable for human habitation.
(ii) Unfavourable Soil for Agriculture: The soil cover on mountain slopes is thin, stony, and less fertile, making large-scale agricultural production extremely difficult.
(iii) Inadequate Infrastructure: Building transportation networks such as roads and railways, as well as establishing electricity and communication grids, is technically challenging and highly expensive.
(iv) Lack of Industrial Growth: Due to poor connectivity and limited raw material accessibility, industrial development and employment opportunities remain restricted.
(v) Harsh Climate and Disasters: Extreme cold conditions, snowfall, and risks of natural hazards like landslides discourage dense human settlement.

Q. 4. Answer in detail / Write short notes: (Any Two, 4 Marks each = 8 Marks)
1. Explain the concept and importance of Demographic Dividend.
Answer:
(i) Concept: Demographic dividend refers to the economic growth potential that results from shifts in a country’s age structure, mainly when the proportion of the working-age population (15 to 59 years) is significantly larger than the non-working dependent population (0–14 years and 60+ years).
(ii) Abundant Working Force: An expansion in the working-age cohort provides a rich supply of productive, dynamic labour for agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, and the service sector.
(iii) Higher Savings and Capital Formation: Since the dependency ratio declines, household expenditure on dependents decreases, which boosts personal savings and leads to higher national investment.
(iv) Rise in Per Capita Income: With more individuals earning and contributing directly to the gross domestic product (GDP), the per capita income of the nation increases steadily.
(v) Increased Female Workforce Participation: Smaller family sizes and reduced childcare responsibilities enable women to attain higher education and join the formal workforce.
(vi) Human Capital Enhancement: Families and governments can allocate greater resources per child towards quality education, digital training, and skill development.
(vii) Prerequisites for Dividend: The demographic dividend is not automatic; it requires supportive government policies in healthcare, quality education, employment generation, and economic planning.

2. Explain the various impacts of migration on population.
Answer:
(i) Redistribution of Population: Migration alters the size and density of population, decreasing it in donor regions and increasing it substantially in recipient urban areas.
(ii) Changes in Age Structure: Since the majority of migrants belong to the productive 15–59 age group, the donor region is left with higher proportions of children and the elderly, while destination cities see a surge in the working population.
(iii) Impact on Sex Ratio: Male-selective migration from rural areas creates an imbalance, raising the sex ratio (more females per thousand males) in rural zones like Kerala and lowering it in metropolitan centers.
(iv) Pressure on Urban Infrastructure: Massive influx into cities causes severe deficits in basic civic amenities such as clean drinking water, public sanitation, healthcare, and mass transportation.
(v) Housing Shortage and Slums: Rapid migration inflates real estate values and causes acute housing shortages, leading to the mushrooming of informal settlements and slums.
(vi) Encroachment on Agricultural Land: Expanding urban fringes consume fertile rural agricultural land for residential, industrial, and commercial construction.
(vii) Socio-Cultural and Economic Exchange: Migration facilitates the diffusion of novel ideas, skills, modern technology, and multicultural synthesis, which stimulates overall economic vitality.

3. Write a detailed note on the occupational structure of the population.
Answer:
(i) Definition: The division and distribution of a country’s working population (aged 15 to 59 years) across different economic activities is known as the occupational structure.
(ii) Primary Activities: Includes occupations directly dependent on natural resources, such as agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishing, gathering, and mining.
(iii) Secondary Activities: Comprises value-addition sectors where raw materials are transformed into finished industrial goods, including manufacturing, food processing, heavy industries, and construction.
(iv) Tertiary and Quaternary Activities: Encompasses all support services such as trade, transport, banking, communications, education, healthcare, research, and information technology.
(v) Indicator of Economic Development: The proportion of the workforce engaged in these sectors serves as an accurate index of a country’s level of economic progress.
(vi) Developed vs. Developing Economies: Developing or agrarian nations have a high proportion of their labour force engaged in primary activities, whereas developed nations employ the vast majority in secondary, tertiary, and quaternary sectors.
(vii) Structural Shift in India: In India, the share of the workforce in primary activities declined from 71.9% in 1901 to 48.96% in 2011, accompanied by a continuous increase in secondary and tertiary service sectors, reflecting ongoing economic transformation.
